This project will build capacity to harness and manage climate data, develop and deliver practical Climate Information Services (CIS) tools and support the coordination and dissemination of tailored information. It will enhance CIL related information and technology infrastructure, improve the accessibility of CIS to sectors and communities and support the application of CIS through real-time development processes.

This document reviews existing information on climate and climate change as they affect Vanuatu's Water sector and summarises current policies, strategies and frameworks. It provides the Water Climate Action Plan and Communication Plan developed through collaboration between the Water Resources Division and the Vanuatu Meteorology and GeoHazards Department (VMGD)

Assessment of vulnerability to climate change undertaken over the last two decades have identified Vanuatu as highly exposed to climate variability and change and at risks of impacts, with the country ranked 9th globally under the Climate Risk Index for 1998-2017.

The Vanuatu Klaemet Infomesen blong Redy, Adapt mo Protekt (Van-KIRAP) Project is delivering climate science to support decision makers and communities in Vanuatu to prepare for and adapt to climate variability and change. Although Vanuatu has been identified as a carbon sink, it is significantly affected already by changing weather patterns and the start of slow-onset climate change, such as warming oceans.

This island nation contains many marine eco-systems, from globally significant coral reefs to mangroves, seagrass areas, seamounts and deep-sea trenches supporting at least 769 fish species, including sharks and rays, as well as whales, dolphins and sea turtles.

At a time when many developed countries are searching for alternatives to national park schemes, some of the less wealthy nations have already adopted other sustainable mechanisms for protected area management. Vanuatu is one such country - a nation that has retained a surprisingly rich cultural heritage despite many years of administration by Britain and France. Vanuatu's customary laws have been successfully incorporated into a western legislation model to provide a regime, which meets the needs of its people by providing both sustainable livelihoods and environmental protection.

The objective of this study is to provide decision makers in the European Commission and other partner countries with sufficient information to identify European Commission cooperation activities with specific environmental objectives and to establish environmental safeguards for other activities.
