This report was commissioned by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat at the request of the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The country’s economy experienced a significant contraction because of the coronavirus disease pandemic, though a fragile recovery is underway with prospects resting largely on opportunities in mining, agriculture, fishing, and tourism.

This policy analysis identifies threats to coral reefs, evaluates the effectiveness of the existing legal framework to address these threats and formulates recommendations to strengthen community-based natural resource management in Solomon Islands coral reefs of crucial importance for food security and rural livelihoods in the archipelago. Logging is a major yet often overlooked threat to coral reefs in the country. Large-scale logging operations cause massive erosion, which has a detrimental effect on water quality. The shipping accidents oil pollution and uncontrolled construction of log pond associated with the logging industry also have a significant impact on coastal ecosystems.

Made up of 347 inhabited islands, 997 in total, the Solomon Islands has a land area of 30,407 km2 located in the Melanesia region of the South Pacific. The nations exclusive economic zone covers an oceanic area of approximately 1,340,000 km2. The capital of Solomon Islands is Honiara, home to 13% of the 680,806 population.

This book provides a brief overview of some of the key aspects of the Solomon island's marine environments and the threats they face. The Solomon region's marine ecosystems are some of the most diverse and intact on earth. They have been identified as part of the 'Coral Triangle' which is an area of the highest biodiversity of coral and fish species on the planet. It is these rich resources that support the livelihoods of the rural population, Solomon people have been sustainably using these marine and forest resources for thousands of years. The recent change to commercial harvesting of forests and reefs as well as future climate change related impacts has and will continue to place new pressure on these resources.
