The Solomon Island government with support from the Australian government-funded Pacific Ocean Litter Project (POLP) implemented a landmark ban on certain types of single-use plastics which came into effect on September 1, 2023.

The pristine beaches, vibrant forests and colourful reefs of the 992 islands of Solomon Islands are threatened by increasing plastic litter arriving on its shores and from discarded plastic waste locally.

Marine litter negatively affects the environment, people and coastal economies around the world. In the Pacific region the problem is even more severe given countries reliance on healthy ocean ecosystems and services.
