The sites at Sandfly in Gela, Central Province were established over a three year period (three sites in 2004, two sites in 2005 and one site in 2007) after a series of workshops on good governance and marine resource awareness raising under the coral gardens project which was implemented by SIDT, ECANSI and Fisheries Division of the Solomon Islands government with funding from SPREP through FSPI. The sites are all community owned although two of them are owned and operated by resort owners who are indigenous residents of Gela

The UNEP-GEF Biosafety Unit recently started an analysis of lessons learned from the 8 UNEP-managed demonstration projects for the implementation of National Biosafety Frameworks. These projects were approved by GEF Council in November 2001, for Bulgaria, Cameroon, China, Cuba, Kenya, Namibia, Poland, and Uganda. The 3-year projects started in September 2002 and were completed in the period 2005-2007.

Sampling an erupting volcano at 550-m depth, discovering roiling pools of liquid sulfur at 400-m depth, watching tropical fish swimming amid fields of black smoker vents, and encountering a blizzard of liquid carbon dioxide globules rising from fractured lava flows at 1600-m depth all sound like wishful thinking or scenes from a science fiction movie. But, we had the good fortune to observe these and other previously unseen phenomena between 2004 and 2006 during a series of expeditions to the Mariana arc in the western Pacific. We describe here several of the most interesting sites, along with their geologic and oceanographic contexts.

Vanuatu is a signatory of many major international conventions such as the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. In 1998, Vanuatu acceded to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The UNCCD aims to guarantee a long term commitment to the parties concerned through a legally-binding document. Its aim is to combat desertification and alleviate the effects of drought on seriously affected countries, those in Africa in particular, through measures that take effect at every level

The realization that local aspirations, livelihoods, conservation and inshore fisheries management should be integrated has seen an increasing emphasis on collaborative and participatory approaches worldwide. In many respects the Pacific has taken the lead with hundreds of communities in Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu and Micronesia now proactively managing their coastal resources. Approaches range from the customary or traditional to complex multi-stakeholder co management.

Millions of visitors to public aquariums and thousands of snorkelers and divers across the globe are amazed by the diversity of life on coral reefs. Looking to replicate this marine wonderland, an increasing number of them have created a "living aquarium" at home, unaware of the impact this is having on species and the lives of people in far-flung regions.

This report presents results from the Supplementary Livelihoods Options for Pacific Island Communities (SLOPIC) study, carried out by the Foundation of the Peoples of the South Pacific International (FSPI) using New Zealand Aid (NZAid) core funds. The main aim of this study was to review supplementary livelihood (SL) projects that have taken place across the South Pacific over the past 5 to 10 years, with a view to extracting 'lessons learned' and identifying the determinants of success.
