The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants is a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from chemicals that remain intact in the environment for long periods, become widely distributed geographically, accumulate in the fatty issue of humans and wildlife, and have harmful impacts on human health or on the environment.

This Protocol on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response, and Cooperation, adopted under the Nouméa Convention, establishes a regional framework for Pacific island countries to prevent and respond to marine oil pollution incidents. It mandates national preparedness measures, including legislation, contingency planning, reporting systems, and equipment stockpiles. The Protocol promotes regional cooperation through information sharing, mutual assistance, and coordination via the SPREP Secretariat. It also outlines financial responsibilities and encourages sub-regional agreements. The Protocol aims to protect the region's vulnerable marine and coastal environments from the harmful effects of oil pollution.
