This year is shaping up to be a big one for the region and we continue to strengthen our collaboration with our partners to support our Members. With 2025 recorded as one of the warmest years on record, the need for enhanced climate science services and environmental resilience has never been more urgent.

To ensure that funds are spent efficiently, effectively, economically and ethically, the Finance and Administration Department ensures that the processes involving identification of needs, selection and solicitation sources, preparation and award of contract including contract administration follows the SPREP procurement principles. This includes procurement activities undertaken by the SPREP programme teams. The Finance and Administration Department is responsible for the oversight of the Procurement function within SPREP. Additionally, ensuring that the Procurement Strategy is aligned to SPREP’s strategic objectives in order to make the organisation more competitive and optimise risk management.

The Second SPREP Partnership Dialogue was hosted in Apia, Samoa under the theme of Resilient Futures: Mobilising Resources for Climate and Environment in a Shifting Donor Landscape. The Dialogue brought together Members and Partners to address the following objectives: 1.) Inform SPREP's strategic planning and programming by promoting integrated programmatic approaches informed by partner insights and investment priorities. 2.) Explore current and emerging challenges in mobilising resources for SPREP's priority areas of work. 3.) Showcase opportunities to enhance partnerships; leveraging science, innovation and technology and mainstreaming people centred approaches in particular gender, youth and traditional knowledge

The purpose of this policy is to ensure SPREP consistently integrate and apply the principles of gender equality, human rights and empowerment of women, girls, persons with disabilities, other disadvantaged groups or people in vulnerable situations in its policies, programmes, projects, processes and operations.

'Oceanic diplomacy' as concept and practice : When practitioners and scholars think of Pacific diplomacy, they usually have in mind a form of diplomacy built on Western practices and protocols, and focused on the engagement between modern sovereign Pacific Islands states and their accredited ambassadors.

The Thirty second SPREP Meeting (32SM)of Officials was held from 2 - 4 September 2025 at the Sheraton Aggie Greys Hotel and Bungalows in Apia, Samoa. Present at the Meeting were American Samoa, Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, France, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Republic of Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Samoa, Tokelau, Tuvalu, United Kingdom and Vanuatu.

Immense concern for the sustainability and wastage of fish maw byproducts were expressed by interviewees. They reported that fish are becoming harder to catch and that sizes of fish caught are declining.

Although numerous records of occurrence exist for oceanic whales and dolphins inhabiting New Guinea waters, there is very little current information about inshore dolphins. Similarly there is very little current information on cetaceans from the Cape York/Torres Strait region of northern Australia.

This guidebook introduces environmental indicators put together by SPREP in consultation with SPREP member Countries and Partners to guide Pacific Island countries. Environmental indicators are measurements that provide insights into matter of larger environmental significance.
