Vanuatu Rapid Climate Risk Assessment Framework – Tourism Sector Case Study Report 2024

A desktop case study has been completed for the dive industry of the tourism sector. The dive industry was chosen due to its incorporation of fisheries and infrastructure elements, meeting the project requirement. The climate hazard information used in the RCRAF and the case study is sourced from the Van-KIRAP project. However, the information on fisheries, infrastructure and tourism were not able to be used as sufficient stakeholder engagement was not received. Consequently, the case study was largely informed by a desktop study.

The El Niño Southern Oscillation is currently neutral. There are some early signs that a La Niña might form in the Pacific Ocean later in 2024. As a result, the Bureau's ENSO Outlook has shifted to La Niña Watch. When La Niña tch criteria have been met in the past, a La Niña event has subse-quently developed around 50% of the time. There is about an equal chance of neutral ENSO conditions in the same outlook period. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the central Pacific have been steadily cooling since December 2023.

The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently neutral. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the central Pacific have been steadily cooling since December 2023. This surface cooling is supported by a significant amount of sub-surface cooling underneath the central and eastern Pacific. Recent cloud and surface pressure patterns are also neutral.

The El Niño continues, but is near its end. Climate models indicate sea surface temperatures in the central tropical Pacific are expected to return to ENSO-neutral later in autumn 2024. Oceanic indicators, such as tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures, have been steadily cooling since December, but are still meeting El Niño thresholds.

Tuki and the Turtle

Tuki and the Turtle’ is a comic book in pidgin language illustrated by the famous Papuan illustrator Gima Segore. In the book, you can join Tuki and his uncle as they learn about sea turtles in the Pacific! In one day, they find turtle nests, meet a large adult female turtle and watch hatchlings take their first steps into the ocean. Six of the seven known species of sea turtle live in the Pacific Ocean; the green, hawksbill, loggerhead, leatherback, olive ridley and the flatback. Sadly, five of these species are threatened with extinction. By following the simple examples in this comic book, we can all play a part in preserving our endangered Pacific sea turtles. This comic offers: a) An accessible educational story aimed at Pacific Island communities. b) Information about the threats faced by turtles in the Pacific. c) Steps communities can take to protect their turtle populations.
