In late 2009 Asia-Pacific ASA was contracted by Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to review the 2000–2004 PACPOL strategy and to use this review to create a new strategy for PACPOL 2010–2014. This paper summarises the revised strategy and the work plans to assist policy and decision makers in formalising the mission and vision of the revised PACPOL Strategy.

The objectives of the training workshop were to help the workshop participants: 1. To understand how to use SEA-PACC to conduct climate-related socioeconomic assessments that support adaptation planning and the evaluation of adaptation projects; 2. To understand and gain experiences in all steps of conducting a SEA-PACC; 3. To be able to collect data using household surveys and key informant interviews; 4. To be able to interpret and make use of data for adaptation planning and strategy development; 5. And, after the workshop, to be able to guide others in using SEA-PACC guidelines and conducting SEA-PACC assessments.

World Wetlands Day this year celebrates terrestrial and wetland forests and their role in our lives. The theme, Forests for Water and Wetlands highlights the intricate links between forests and wetlands such as mangroves and freshwater swamps. Forested wetlands play a vital role in maintaining our freshwater resources and our wetlands. Forests store carbon and thus help combat global climate change regardless of where they are located. Wetlands are full of life and rich in biodiversity – they house fish, birds, insects and a variety of plants and are often landing sites for migratory birds.

The Noumea Convention was negotiated under the framework of UNEP’s Regional Seas Programme and adopted in 1986. The Convention and its two related Protocols (Protocol for the Prevention of Pollution of the South Pacific Region by Dumping; Protocol concerning Co?operation in Combating Pollution Emergencies in the South Pacific Region) entered into force on 22 August 1990.

The Government of the Republic of Palau has developed this National Spill Contingency Plan (NATPLAN) as part of its commitment to protecting our valuable coastal and marine resources from an eminent or substantial threat to the marine environment or public. NATPLAN has been developed to reflect the essential steps necessary to initiate, conduct and terminate an emergency spill response on, or into the navigable waters of the Republic of Palau, on the adjoining shorelines, the waters of the contiguous zone or into waters of the exclusive economic zone.
