At that seminar it was recommended that a scientific environmental monitoring programme be established as soon as possible to investigate the problems of possible contamination of the Torres Strait marine environment. Since the establishment of the Torres Strait Baseline study concern over potential environmental damage to the Torres Strait has increased. In addition to the mine at Ok Tedi in the Western Province there are now gold mining operations at Porgera in Enga Province.
