One World:South Pacific Convention on trade of Toxic Waste/Namosi Copper Mine Proposal and possible environmental impact

Abstract

Reports on issues surrounding the South Pacific Convention on Trade of Toxic Waste, and possible environmental impact of the proposed Namosi Copper mine in Fiji. David Jagger speaks to Christopher Lam who is the spokesperson for the Australian delegation to the regional convention. Mr. Lam outlines Australia's possition on this issue and answers to a claim by Greenpeace that Australia is trying to weaken the pending South Pacific Convention. Also mentioned is the Basel Convention (1989), which banned all disposal of toxic wastes. Also discussed is the proposed Namosi Copper mine in Fiji, with interviews from Frank McShane (Specialist in Resource Management - Mining), and Prof. Peter Newall (Head of Biology Department of the University of the South Pacific)
