Three type of marine mammals are recognised the whale and dolphins the seals and sealions and the dugongs and manatees. None of the latter are found in New Zealand waters, but of the 75 species of cetaceans, 34 have bben reported from this region, and we also have two indigenous pinnipeds. The rate of whale strandings in New Zealand is high, averaging over one stranding per week, occasionally involving dozens or hundreds of animals.|2copies
