Abstract

The Macuata Gillnet Ban tells the story of how a coastal fishing community, with help from Government and Regional experts, succeeded to turn a distressed fishery into one that has created work and wealth. Conserving natural resources is vital to every country's survival. This is a conservation story with a happy ending. Fish stocks in Macuata did recover and steps were taken to ensure that the stocks would remain sustainable.
