Abstract
Islands have had a special significance for the study of ecology and evolution. Observations on island fauna inspired Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace; Robert MacArthur and Edward O. Wilson developed models of species richness as a function of invasion and extinction rates from data on island communities.
