This report focuses on Eco-Tourism in Fiji and prospects of development for this Industry. With interviews from Dr. Hanna Aiala (Lecturer at Irvine University of California), Forenda Sighn (Fiji National Trust Chairman), and Sefanaia Tambua (Native Land Trust Board). They each give their opinion of the Industry and how it can be utilised to preserve and conserve natural resources.

A special report on the plight of sea birds; the Wondering Albatross, presented by David Jagger. This report documents the use of satellites to track flight movement and determine habitats of the sea birds, as well as the assessment of the impact of Japanese long-line fishing fleets. A number of interviews from individuals carrying out work related to the conservation of the sea birds; Dr. Andre Bowmanskier (National Centre for Scientific Research), and David Agnew (Data Manager for the International Community for Conservation of Marine Resources), as well as ecologist David Nichols and physician Dr. Eric Butcher of La Trobe University, explaining the technology.

One World:Forest Policies in Papua New Guinea/Regional Ban Proposal-Movement of Toxic & Hazardous Waste/Global Conference on Sustainable Development on Small Island States

Dr. Brian Brunton of ICRAF (International Community Rights Advocacy Forum), gives an analysis on the latest development on forest policies in Papua New Guinea, explaining some of the implications these policies will have on the forests and the people of PNG. Lelei Lelalu (Coordinator for the United Nations Global Conference on sustainable development of Small Islands), and Samoan Ambassador Tuiloma Neroni Slade, give their opinion on the importance of this global Conference. Mr. Michael Maui (Director General of the Multi-Lateral Division of Foreign Affairs Department of PNG), explains why a regional convention could work well alongside the Basel Convention on toxic and hazardous waste.

One World:Timber Supply Areas-Papua New Guinea Forest Policies

A report on the Papua New Guinea Timber Industry and a new concept known as the "Timber-Supply Areas". This concept is explained in an interview by Tim Neville (Minister for Forests, PNG). Joe Kell, an environmental activitist expresses his concerns about this new concept which he believes has not been explained properly to the public. Taherei Nadarasha (Research Fellow with the Environment and Development Unit of the National Research Institute in Port Moresby) believes this new concept could be adopted to accomodate better management of other forest values.

One World:Environmental Vigilante Group-Enforcing International Conservation Laws/Views on Papua New Guinea Timber Industry

This edition of One World focuses on two of the highly discussed issues in the Pacific; fishing and logging. Carolyn Court reports on the work of an environmental vigilante group enforcing International fishing conservation laws, as well as promoting traditional fisheries knowledge. This group is known as the "Sea Shephard's Society" formed in 1977 by Captain Paul Watson in the Pacific. On the logging issue, Carolyn Court speaks to Tony Bower (Forestry Consultant) who explains the helicopter logging concept which is seen as the only viable option to reduce environmental effects of large scale logging. Sasa Jebe, Director of the Non-Government Organisation "Village Development Trust", provides an example of a small scale forestry operation and how this concept can work.

One World:Forum Secretariat Work on Solar Power Project/Non-Government Organisation work in Papua New Guinea

Nick Wardrop (Renewable Energy Supervisor) with the Forum Secretariat, explains the benefits of the Solar Power System Project in the Pacific and how it is operating in Marshall Islands. Also in this report is a documentary prepared by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on logging in Papua New Guinea. This broadcast covers major issues relating to logging by foreign companies in Papua New Guinea, including interview excerpts from the Ministry of Forests of PNG, and Chris Kia (Community Education Trainer), with the Melanesian Foundation.

In this report, Carolyn Court reports on the environmental impact of logging on forests, training workshops on monitoring sea-level rise, and Australia's position on recent international environmental treaty negotiations. Dr. Frances Putts (Centre for International Forestry Research in Indonesia), discusses with Carolyn Court a project connecting two environmental issues. This discussion focuses on the possibility of reducing the impact of logging on Forests. Dr. Chalapan Kaluwin (SPREP Climate Change Officer), explains the objectives of the training workshops on monitoring sea level rise. Dr. Jurdy Handerson (National Chair for Australian Development Organisation Community Aid Abroad), describes why Community Aid Abroad has been involved in presenting this possition to the Government. Lastly, Ian Fry (National Liason Officer), for Greenpeace Australia expresses his concern about the International Environmental Treaty Negotiations.

One World:Development Options-Solomon Islands/Story of "Tetapare Island"

This week presents a report discussing development options for Solomon Islands which involves an electricity scheme in Western Province, and a story on the Island of Tetapare with proposed resettlement after 100 years of abandon. Carolyn Court provides a brief background on this project, while Neil Kawan (Technical Officer for APTCE - Appropriate Technology for Community & Environment), describes some of the processes involved in this electricity scheme and how it is progressing. Peter Soloko, a descendant of the original landowners of Tetapare, gives a description of the island. Their is also an exchange of resettlement and development options for the island.

Lynn Newall (Pacific Islands Forester with the US Forests Service), explains Mangrove Systems and how they work. A 38minute audio presentation covering the following issues; rehabilitation of Nauru corals, Greenpeace Report on potential impact of Ozone Layer depletion on live stock and pets, and environmental concerns raised at the Asia & Pacific Regional Non-Government Womens Forum held in Manila, Phillipines. Janet Hunt (Director of the International Womens Development Agency), explains issues discussed in the Forum relating to the environment. Greenpeace campaigner, Liz Smith explains the Greenpeace Report and it's implications. On this same issue, Dr. Hue Worth (National President of Royal Society for the protection of Animals in Australia), explains how a conclusion that skin cancer in Australian pets has increased measurably in the last 3 years, was reached. Dr. Richard Murphy reports on coral bleaching and low coral diversity in Nauru waters.
