Palau, a Pacific Island nation, has taken a strong stance against the export of live reef fish, citing environmental concerns and threats to marine biodiversity. The government has banned at least one company found to be involved in this type of trade. This decision aligns with broader regional efforts to safeguard fragile reef ecosystems from over fishing and unsustainable commercial practices. The move signals growing regulatory oversight in the Pacific regarding marine conservation and the export of vulnerable marine species.

This Strategy is an framework document that defines Palau’s environmental priorities and actions. It implements and is consistent with existing national policies that promote sustainable development and environmental conservation. The Strategy prescribes environmental management actions in eleven sectors including climate change; land management and food security; nearshore marine management; offshore marine management; freshwater management; biodiversity conservation; waste management; chemical management; built environment; culture, heritage, and awareness; and environmental governance.

This State of the Environment (SOE) Report is part of the process of assessing the environmental issues confronting Palau, and will contribute to the development of a National Environmental Management Strategy (NEMS) for the Republic. It was commissioned by the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme for the Government of the Republic of Palau.
