Inter-Island/Islet Biosecurity and Environmental Monitoring Systems - PROTEGE

Biosecurity and environmental monitoring systems were drawn up and implemented between the islands of Futuna and Alofi as well as between Uvea and the islets of Wallis lagoon. These systems aim to prevent the spread of invasive alien species (IAS), in particular to ensure that the benefits of the eradication and restoration initatives carried out as part of the project are susaintable.

Ocean Outlook, fortnight to 11 April: • Sea surface temperature (SST) forecasts more than 0.8°C above normal are favoured in the following country EEZs: Palau, northern CNMI, western FSM, far northern RMI, southern Line Is. (Kiribati), most of PNG, central and western Solomon Is., most of Vanuatu, northern and central New Caledonia and northern French Polynesia. SST anomalies above 1.2°C are favoured in southern Palau, large parts of PNG, far southeastern French Polynesia and southwestern Pitcairn Is. Elsewhere SSTs are predicted to be near-normal.

Environmental Restoration Operations - PROTEGE

Environmental restoration operations were implemented at five sites that are key for biodiversity and ecosystem services in Wallis and Futuna, through the removal of invasive plant species (IPS) and the reintroduction of heritage plants. The project's contribution aimed to provide technical expertise on appropriate methods of combating IPS present in order to target efforts, and to finance the human and materials resources necessary to carry out actions in support of local services.

Eradicating Rat Populations - PROTEGE

Operations to eradicate rat population have been taking place on islets in French Polynesia and in Wallis and Futuna to preserve native species and ecosystems threatened by these rodents. The main goal are to strengthen the resilience of communities on Ua Pou and Wallis to preserve populations of native species. These include the seabirds that nest on the islets of the Marquesas archipelago, as well as the birds, turtles, crabs and plants that comprise the ecosystems of the islets in the lagoon of Wallis.

Regional Exchange Forums and Platforms on Invasive Alien Species (IAS) - PROTEGE

Cooperation between the four territories and other Pacific countries and territories has been significantly strengthened through their participation in regional stakeholder network events and in a joint study tour, as well as thanks to the improved access to online exchange platforms. The main aim of this cooperation has been to bring together local practitioners facing similar issues, so that they can share knowledge, tools and experience on invasive alien species (IAS) management.

Invasive Plant Species Control and Biodiversity Management - PROTEGE

Actions to control invasive plant species restore biodiversity were carried out at the Taputapuatea UNESCO site located on the island of Raiatea in French Polynesia. By promoting the link between natural and cultural heritage, project has stimulated an ecological management approach aimed at strengthening native, and even endemic flora. Thanks to the coordination work of an ecologist who has been on site for four years, awareness-raising and training activities have strengthened the skills and commitment of local communities. Based on a survey of local biodiversity and the invasive species present, removal actions were carries out on four target plant species before reinstalling heritage plants. One of the restored sites has also been enhanced bu the creation of an educational trail set up by the local association.

Invasive Ungulates Control Operations - PROTEGE

Operations to control Rusa deer and wild pig populations have been carried out in New Caledonia to limit the damage caused by these invasive alien species (IAS) to ecosystems, crops and water resources. The main aim of these actions was to protect the rainforests of the Central Mountain Range, whose environments are remarkable for thier exceptional biodiversity and their crucial role in maintaining essential ecosystem services, particularly those linked to the water cycle.

Deer Abundance and Impact Monitoring Systems - PROTEGE

Innovative monitoring systems have been developed to measure the impact of the Rusa Deer on the undergrowth of New Caledonia rain forests and to assess the abundance of this invasive species in three priority areas of the territory. The development of these systems follows objectives that complement the professional control actions implemented within the PROTEGE framework. The monitoring aims to carry out an initial assessment and evaluate the benefits of the control operations, using tools tailored to action areas that are difficult to access and boast exceptional biodiversity. More than 80% of the plant species in high altitude rainforests are endemic to New Caledonia.
