Scientists at the Khaled Sultan Living Oceans Foundation (KSLOF) have released their findings on the state of coral reefs in Palau. Their research, based on extensive underwater surveys, found Palau's reef had the highest live coral cover of all the reefs studied on the Global Reef Expedition, a scientific research mission to assess the health and resiliency of coral reefs around the world

In this October issue, we are pleased to announce the launch of the first ‘Call for Decade Actions’ that will be open from October 15th, 2020 to January 15th, 2021. This Call aims to identify transformative global and regional programs that focus on advancing science to support the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as major in-kind or financial contributions to Decade Actions or coordination functions.

To best protect ecosystems and human well-being there is a need to prioritize how the scarce resources of time, funding and human labour should be allocated to be most effective.

Our mission to Palau in January 2015 allowed us to observe some of the most beautiful and pristine coral reefs in the Pacific Ocean. We found the benthic communities to be in good condition and the reef fish communities to be comparable to other nearby countries surveyed in the south and wester pacific. With additional management of local fishing pressure, particularly near more populated areas, it is possible that the fish communities can be some of the best in the world.

In 2019 the Sirebe Rainforest Conservation area was declared a protected area under the 2010 protected area ACT. It protects and conserves one of the last untouched rainforest ecosystems in Choiseul Province and Solomon Islands. The area features lowland and hill rainforest giving presence to a high variety of wildlife and plant species.

In 2019 the Siporae Rainforest Protected areas was declared a protected area under the 2010 protected area ACT. The area consists pf lowland and hill rainforest giving shelter to many wildlife and plant species.

Fishery resource are vitally important to Fiji. They are significant to the country in terms of food security, employment and exports - in addition to their recreational and social attributes. Fiji has a wide range of fishery resources, including finfish, invertebrates and plants. By one estimate, over 350 species are harvested in Fiji.

Pacific Island countries and territories (PICs) comprise vast land mad marine ecosystems. Much of the world's biodiversity is located in the region. Pacific Islands people and cultures are connected through the Pacific Ocean, which is larger than all of the planet's land area combined.

Sea surface temperature, determined remotely by satellite (SSST), measures only the thin "skin" of the ocean but its widely used to quantify the thermal regimes on coral reefs across the globe.
