Tuvalu is a small atoll nation located in the Central Pacific, consisting of nine islands which cover a land area of 26 sq km. Even though Tuvalu is small, the limited land area and ongoing migration to the main island results is a high population density in Funafuti.

Short animation to provide Tuvalu communities an overview of their recycling initiative, the Waste Levy. The animation explains how residents can recycle eligible items and earn money, while also highlighting the environmental benefits of reducing litter and keeping their island clean. By taking part, communities contribute to a healthier environment, support local recycling efforts, and help protect the natural beauty of our Pacific home.

Tuvalu’s waste management system is guided by the Tuvalu Integrated Waste Policy and Action Plan (2017–2026), which aims to create cleaner and healthier islands by focusing on prevention, minimization, reuse, recycling, recovery, and safe disposal of waste.

PacWastePlus has assisted Tuvalu to understand the legacy asbestos management issues and recycling to all outer islands. This short video provides a summary of project activities.

As a Party, Tuvalu is obliged to enact national regulations to bring the conventions into the national regulatory framework. It is these national laws and regulations that then provide the implementing mechanisms to manage asbestos and ensure compliance with the conventions
