One of the major challenges for the fisheries sector across the globe will be managing the effects of the global economic crisis. The fisheries sector in the Pacific islands region will, like others around the world, be impacted by the global downturn. On the demands side one can expect that the there will be a weakening in demand for high value product such as sashimi grade tuna. A second impact might be that businesses will find it harder to obtain finance for investments in the tuna fishery. Much of what might occur will be outside the control of FFA, but there is a role to play in advising governments how best to respond to the situation

On low lying coral islands, potable water is commonly sourced from shallow, fresh groundwater lenses. Although rainwater is also collected in tanks in the wet periods, dependence on the lense for all water needs becomes critical in dry periods. Protecting the groundwater from pollution is a major concern. In the management of reticulated supplies private land is sometimes converted to a public reserve to restrict access and use in an attempt to ensure that groundwater is protected from surface contaminants. Usually this is achieved by a lease agreement between landholders and the government utility and this arrangement can be politically, socially and economically contentious. However in the village context where private wells are still used by landholders, control of pollution sources is more practically complex, while still raising many sociocultural considerations. The coral reefs of Indonesia are currently under threat of degradation from both natural and human activities. Human destruction of coral reefs by bomb fishing, cyanide poisoning or anchor damage is now the target of a variety of public awareness campaigns. Natural causes of reef degradation include typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, coral bleaching from above-normal sea surface temperatures, and Crown-of-Thorns (COTs) starfish outbreaks. While human causes can be controlled and reversed, natural causes are more problematic. Outbreaks of COTs, however, sometimes offer an opportunity for successful human intervention.

The Pacific tropical botanical garden was chartered by an Act of the United States Congress in August 19, 1964 to form a non-profit corporation with these purposes: a) to establish, develop, operate and maintain for the benefit of the people of the United States an educational and scientific center in the form of a tropical botanical garden or gardens, together with such facilities as libraries, herbaria , laboratories and museums which are appropriate and necessary for encouraging and conducting research in basic and applied tropical botany. b) to foster and encourage fundamental research with respect to tropical plant life and to encourage research and study of the uses of tropical flora in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, medicine and other sciences; c) to disseminate through publications and other media the knowledge acquired at the gardens relative to basic and applied tropical botany d) to collect and ciltivate tropical flora of every nature and origin and to preserve for the people of the United States species of tropical plant life threatened and extinction e) to provide a beneficial facility which will contribute to the education, instruction, and recreation of the people of the United States.
