Poor waste management poses risks to the economies of PICTs as most rely heavily on clean environment for agricultural activities and a vibrant tourism industry, therefore polluted and degraded environments pose a significant threat to PICTs.

Every year, the amount of plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems is estimated between 9-14 million tons and this projection could nearly triple to 23-37 million ton per year by 2040.

As a Party, Solomon Islands is obliged to enact national regulations to bring the conventions into the national regulatory framework. It is these national laws and regulations that then provide the implementing mechanisms to manage asbestos and ensure compliance with the conventions.
