This report was commissioned by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat at the request of the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The purpose was to provide a foundation for strengthening private sector engagement with the public sector and to provide guidance for its members about international financing opportunities for climate change adaptation and mitigation activities.

The country’s economy experienced a significant contraction because of the coronavirus disease pandemic, though a fragile recovery is underway with prospects resting largely on opportunities in mining, agriculture, fishing, and tourism.

This policy analysis identifies threats to coral reefs, evaluates the effectiveness of the existing legal framework to address these threats and formulates recommendations to strengthen community-based natural resource management in Solomon Islands coral reefs of crucial importance for food security and rural livelihoods in the archipelago. Logging is a major yet often overlooked threat to coral reefs in the country. Large-scale logging operations cause massive erosion, which has a detrimental effect on water quality. The shipping accidents oil pollution and uncontrolled construction of log pond associated with the logging industry also have a significant impact on coastal ecosystems.

Made up of 347 inhabited islands, 997 in total, the Solomon Islands has a land area of 30,407 km2 located in the Melanesia region of the South Pacific.
