A Healthcare Waste Management Strategy & Implementation Guidelines document provides the specific requirements for implementation of healthcare waste policy. This Model Strategy and Guideline is designed to assist Pacific Island Countries to reflect the requirements of appropriate national Acts and the Regulations, as they apply to managing the health and safety risks, and environmental risks posed by healthcare waste. The Model Strategy and Guideline should be tailored to the individual legislative framework of the country seeking to adopt and implement the Strategy and Guideline. As such, this Model Strategy and Guideline is designed to provide base information that is easily tailored to specific circumstances and legislation used in Country. Lastly, this document contains all critical elements needed to produce a National Healthcare Waste Management Strategy and Implementation Guideline. However, depending on circumstances, some of the Strategy and Guideline sections may not be needed. In those situations, those sections should be excised from the final document adopted.

The overall objective of PacWastePlus is “to generate improved economic, social, health and environmental benefits arising from stronger regional economic integration and the sustainable management of natural resources and the environment”. The specific objective is “to ensure the safe and sustainable management of waste with due regard for the conservation of biodiversity, health and wellbeing of Pacific Island communities and climate change mitigation and adaptation requirements”.

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) provides short (weather) and medium (Climate) term forecasts and warning to the people of Vanuatu. However medium terms forecasts (Climate Information Services) struggle to find its intended destination and audience, resulting in the practical application of Climate Information Services at the community level being limited if not nonexistent.

The goal of this manual is to encourage and support seabird conservation and research across the region, particularly in areas where this work is just starting out. We consider all of the proven methods and survey types that are currently in use across the region, to provide readers with the tools required to run successful seabird survey and monitoring programmes. To further illustrate how successful projects can be undertaken, real world case studies are presented – written by experts currently working in the field. By utilising the in-depth knowledge, experience and expertise of people who have worked successfully on a species, group of species or an ecosystem, readers can transfer these tried and tested methods to projects starting out elsewhere in Oceania.
