The Pacific islands region is the least urbanised region in the world, and for the region’s vast rural populations sanitation is primarily managed at the household, village, or island level. Central sewerage systems are generally only available in urban centres and therefore less relevant for the majority of Pacific people.

The Environment Investigation Agency, WWF Pacific, Centre for International Environmental Law and Massey University will bring together panelists to discuss key gaps in current frameworks governing plastics and highlight the role Pacific islands states play as champions for a global Convention to combat plastic pollution, supporting action at global, regional and national levels. moderator Alfred Ralifo will challenge the panelists to consider ways to elevate the Pacific Islands perspective as champions in key international fora in 2021/2022.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) engaged Accent Environmental (Accent) to undertake a literature review and desktop assessment of small-scale waste management technologies and provide PacWastePlus participating countries with information to assist with any technology investigations they may be planning.

This publication provides details on some of the most appropriate waste management technologies identified for Organic Materials - with consideration to the inherent constraints of the Pacific island region. Of all waste items received at Pacific Island landfills, organic material is one that is easily avoided. Stopping organic waste going to landfill, we immediately reduce increased greenhouse gas emissions and start supporting a circular economy (if we actively compost the organic material that is!)

Plastic recycling is the process of recovering waste plastic and reprocessing it into a useful product. This publication provides a details on some of the appropriate plastic waste management techniques identified during a recent research project with consideration to the inherent constraints of the Pacific island region. In-country small-scale recycling facilities were the focus of the investigation as we sought to identify opportunities to establish facilities that can collect, compact and export/recycle plastic waste in the Pacific.

Tonga is an archipelago of islands, located in the Polynesia region of the South Pacific. Tonga comprises of 36 inhabited islands (171 islands in total) over five administrative divisions, covering a land area of 749km2. Its exclusive economic zone covers an oceanic area of approximately 700,000km2. The capital of Tonga is Nuku’alofa (on the island of Tongatapu), home to 23% of the 100,651 population.

Tuvalu is a small atoll nation located in the Polynesia region in the Central Pacific. The nine islands of Tuvalu cover a land area of 26km2 making it the fourth smallest nation in the world. Its exclusive economic zone covers an oceanic area of approximately 900,000km2. The capital of Tuvalu is Funafuti, home to 60% of the 10,507 population.
