Marine spatial planning (MSP) is a management tool that is increasingly being used around the country and world to coordinate decisions for coastal and ocean activities and environments in a comprehensive plan. MSP uses data on the location of important marine resources, human activities, and other key components to determine the most appropriate locations for particular uses to achieve ecological, economic and social objectives. The planning process often displays and analyzes this information using maps and other tools to inform the development of the plan.

The Porbeagle Shark (Lamna nasus) is a remarkable fast, large shark that has adapted to cold waters in the northern and southern hemisphere through heat exchangers that keep its body warmer than surrounding waters. Its extensive range includes the North Atlantic, South Atlantic, South Pacific, South Indian, and Antarctic Oceans. Like other sharks, it is part of an ancient lineage stretching back more than 200 million years. Its evolutionary fine-tuning hasnt protected it, however, from a literal feeding frenzy by humans on sharks.

NATPLAN has been developed to reflect the essential steps necessary to initiate, conduct and terminate an emergency spill response on, or into the navigable waters of the Republic of Palau, on the adjoining shorelines, the waters of the contiguous zone or into waters of the exclusive economic zone.

Nauru faces many economic and environmental challenges. In the 1970s the country experienced an economic boom due to phosphate mining, however, because of mismanagement of the revenue, the country currently has limited financial resources to undertake many of its development programmes including environmentally sound waste management. In the face of a range of environmental, social and economic threats from poor waste management and pollution, and in the context of the limited resources, this National Solid Waste Management Strategy is developed as a matter of priority. The proposed way forward is based on an analysis of the existing situation and was developed using a participatory and consultative approach through workshops held in November 2008 and October 2010.

The Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation (PIRT) is a coalition of nature conservation and development organizations, governments, inter-government, donor agencies and community groups created to increase effective conservation action in the Secretariat of the Pacific Islands Region. It was formed in 1997 at the request of Pacific Island countries and territories. The forum enables those organizations working on nature conservation in the Pacific to improve their collaboration and coordination towards effective conservation action. It is the key coordination mechanism for the implementation of the Action Strategy for Nature Conservation in the Pacific Island Region 2008-2012. These are the final outcomes statement of their 13th Meeting which was held in Samoa 5-9 July, 2010.
