Corals are critical component in coral reefs, building the structure (along with coralline algae) and providing the habitat for a myriad of other species. Corals are sea anemones, which are very closely related to corals and illustruate much of what corals are.

The development of the first Comprehensive Manual on Port Reception Facilities was agreed at the thirty second session of the Maritime Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in March 1992.

Widespread coral reef decline has included the decline of reef fish populations, and the subsistence and artisanal fisheries that depend on them.
