The Pacific islands region is one of the world's most vulnerable regions to climate change. The Pacific island countries and territories (PICT) depend on their food production systems, fisheries, which are both expected to be largely affected by climate change. There is also an expected increase in intensity and frequency of tropical cyclones that have the potential to cause widespread destruction throughout the island region. These factors make it essential for these islands to adapt and to prepare for the challenges posed by climate change. However, it is impossible to know which adaptive measures to take when there is a lack of high quality climate information to support the planning and management of climate risks.

The 10th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity was held from the 18th to the 29th October in Nagoya, Japan. About 15,000 delegates representing parties, UN Agencies, NGOs, Inter-Governmental Organizations, indigenous and local communities, private sector, and academia attended the meeting.

Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity at its eighth meeting, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB). The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity was designated focal point for the Year.

Pacific islands are extremely vulnerable to climate change. Pacific island culture, traditions, economy and environment will be affected by the effects of climate change, marking an urgent call for partnerships and collaboration to increase the resilience of communities to adapt to these changes. More than 80% of Pacific Islanders live on or near the coast. Community action will ensure that Pacific islands are strengthened to reduce the impacts of climate change such as sea level rise and storm surges. This global change requires island action to protect your island home for future generations.

Organise a national launch for the Year of the Sea Turtle. Invite schools, legislators, community groups, the media and the general public to attend. Have an information display/presentations about turtles and their role in the Pacific.

The Secretariat’s approved work programme and budget (WP&B) for 2006 was prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Financial Regulations and is expressed in USD.

In accordance with the “Rules of Procedure of the SPREP Meeting” (Rules 8.1 and 8.2), where a Meeting is hosted by the Secretariat, the Chair shall rotate alphabetically. Where a Meeting is not hosted by the Secretariat, the Chair shall be provided by the host country.

This document outlines the new programme-based approach that has been adopted for the SPREP Secretariat. This new approach to regional delivery is both more innovative and strategic than the project-based approach previously practiced. It provides clear, measurable indicators of the progress and impact of the Secretariat’s work in the region. This is an important element of the Secretariat’s efforts to encourage long-term collaboration with existing and new partners.

SPREP’s direction in the Islands Ecosystems Programme reflects a fundamental commitment to sustaining the livelihoods of Island peoples today and tomorrow by supporting ecosystem management and species conservation. The Programme focuses on developing the capacities of the peoples of the islands to equip them to sustainably manage and conserve the terrestrial, coastal and marine ecosystems of their islands. The Programme also focuses efforts to protect priority threatened species, and to protect Pacific island countries and territories (PICTs) from invasive alien species and living modified organisms (LMOs). SPREP’s core business under this programme is to address the issues of ecosystem conservation, the sustainable management of natural resources and the protection of priority threatened species from the threats of human-induced impacts, invasive species and living modified organisms. These issues require action at the community, national, regional and international levels.
